Dear philosophy students,

As some of you may know, we are searching for a new junior faculty member in M&E.  Student input is important to us, as is getting some idea of how the candidates interact with students.  We have found that the best way to get this information is to have informal sessions where the candidates meet with students, give a brief informal presentation of their research and teaching interests, and have an opportunity to interact.  To that end:

For the next four Fridays, there will be candidate-meets-students sessions.

- In the Common Room (WMC) 4619.
- Starting at 9:30am - running until 10:30am or 11am (some of you will be running off to Sam's class at 10:30, but the sessions can run longer).
- All of you are invited and, indeed, strongly urged to attend if you can.
- Pastries and breakfasty beverages will be served.

You are all also more than merely invited to come to the candidates job talks - at the regular colloquium time (3:30pm) on those days.

The Candidates (all of them have other interests besides their AOS):

Jan 13th  Will Fleisher (Rutgers: Epistemology, Phil of Mind)
Jan 20th  Rohan Sud (Michigan: Metaphysics, Philosophy of Language)
Jan 27th  Fatema Amijee (Texas, Austin: Metaphysics, Early Modern)
Feb 3rd   Jennifer Wang (Rutger, currently at Stanford: Metaphysics)

Thanks for participating,
Martin Hahn

October 23, 2016

Hello everyone,

Further to the call for papers circulated in the summer and early fall, the [PSU] SFU Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Conference on the topics of philosophy, law, and politics will be going forward on November 5, 2016 with Beedie School of Business. SFU Philosophy Department's Dr. Sam Black, interested in social and political philosophy and ethics as well as SFU Professor of Aesthetic and Moral Philosophy, Steinway Artist, and Recording Artist with Albany Records, New York, Dr. Yaroslav (Slava) Senyshyn will be keynote speakers on the day of the event. Successful undergraduate candidates will be presenting throughout the day. Currently, the timetable will be from 9am-5pm. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. A second email will be circulated closer to the date with a timetable so that students will be able to review the paper topics and plan their availability.

We very much hope to see you there. This semester the PSU has not confirmed our customary pub night as we don't have full details regarding the conference expenses at this time. We still plan to throw a pub night if the budget is feasible, but the conference may turn out to be the only opportunity for a social this semester. Perhaps students might come out on Saturday, November 5, 2016 to lend support, going to Club Ilia, located at 8902 University High Street in Univercity, after the conference has concluded. If you do have any questions, or require any further information, please feel free to contact me anytime. Thanks to everyone who participated in the first SFU Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Conference with SFU Philosophy and Beedie School of Business. The papers presented will be published in the first issue of the Simon Fraser University Undergraduate Journal of Philosophy.
